Forgive yourself for losing your temper at your spouse. Forgive yourself for eating cookies when you swore you’d be healthy this week. Forgive yourself for having another glass of wine after dinner. Forgive yourself for feeling sad or negative or scared.
Many of us proudly proclaim, “I’m a perfectionist!” as if it’s sign that we’re more dedicated and hardworking than your average Joe. It’s often worn like a badge of honor in the same way we wear “I’m so busy.”
I’d thought my new life in California would bring me happiness. I thought sticking it to those “mean people” would bring me satisfaction. From the outside I had a “cool life” and a “cool job” but inside, I was still anxious, lost, and insecure.
Something inside of me shifted when I saw those scars. A warmth swelled in my chest. Instead of disgust and self-judgment, I felt compassion for the girl looking back at me in the mirror.
